The Arcades of the Townhall of Bremen

Since 1410 the historical townhall of Bremen is standing at the market place and we can call it one of the loveliest townholl in Europe.
At the end of the 16th century, 2oo years later it had been built, the townhall was redesigned. The main entrance of the new Renaissance townhall faces not any longer the dome but the market place. The town and her citizens wanted to show their independance to the Church, their openness, and their self-confidence.

The middle part of the facade had been pulled down and new designed in a Renaissance style by Lüder von Bentheim. All the handicrafts and workmen didn`t even get a mention.
The famous arcades were designed and built at this occasion, too. All 22 figures of the arcs represent a special virtue. Each arc shows a pair of virtues.

The 1st Arc: Philosophy and Truth
You can see a crowned woman, who holds a ceptre and books in her hands. She is the symbol of philosophy. The second figure shows a woman with a sun. That means the unchanging truth of god.

The 2nd Arc: Solicitude and Protection
The pictures of the 2nd arc are the most famous visual representation of the whole facade. You can see two women. The left woman holds a sphere in her hand. On the sphere there is enthrowned a cock, who is a symbol for watchfulness. The right woman and the mother hen represent motherliness.
In 1845 there was published a tale, in which the mother hen with her chickens had founded the town Bremen.

The 3rd Arc: Diligence and Craftsmanship
The spade in the hand of the nearly undressed woman probably represents hard working. On the other side we can see objects like whips and spurs. That means craftsmanship.

The 6th Arc: Patience and Chastity
This arc is given to the Church. The left figure means the bounded Curch, on the other side the liberated Curch is symbolized.

The 7th Arc: Abstinence and History

This arc shows on the left side the charming “Brema”, who is riding on a dolphin with the key in her hands. Her partner is “Sapientia”, the wisdom, not very charming.
