Renaissance Architecture is Changing - A Visit in the old Town of Groningen /NL.

From 12th until 16th of May 2000 we have made a study visit in Groningen. We have had the oportunity to see a pretty building of the 15th century in a good condition. It is a building of the Court of Groningen.

This is the cover of the broschure from which we took some intormations and grafics.

The building in the Boteringestraat 36 - 38 is an interesting historical object. It is estimated in 1477 as a komplex with several parts. It was used in early times as a living quartier.

The eldest part (A) is in the right. Part B belongs to it with the entrance and the escaliers, part C had the flat for the Master of the house , D und E are halls, F is a room for the councils, G is the part of the prisons and H a archiv.

From 1904 until 1917 this building has been changed and restaured. In that time it has also been changed in its style and today they renew it again in old origin styles with new technologies to conserve it.

We had the oportunity having been very well guided by Mr. Jaap Pekelaar and Mrs. Duglore Katz, both are from Groningen.

This foto shows the gate to the court inside. It is built from sandstone and made in a toskanic style. Above the bow there is a fine relief. It is made in 1627.

To compare this style with elements of the Court Building in the Oude Boteringestraat: This is an old gable, well survived from the Renaissance time. In former times is was an old merchants´house. It is situated near die cematory of the St. Maartinskerk in the St. Maarini-Kerhoof 12. It is near the Provincie Huis, the administration building.

Back to the Court Building. While the outside decoration has parts of late renaissance styled elements, is the inside formed in pretty baroque.

Nowadays this building with its nice designed things is in a restauration. Some Students are living in there while the rooms are not used. Here some views on its rooms in which we could go in: the courtroom.

The decoration of walls and ceilings in the Baroque Stile.

A wonderful candelier.

The decoration of the wall with a clock.

The design of rooms - the arrangement with furniture and a painting.

Baroque design with paintings and mirrors,

A fresco.

It was a impressing visit. Here some of the 10.4 with their teachers, Mrs. Katz and Mr. Pekelaar. We were very lucky to meet such friendly persons, engaged in what our students were interested and having lots of time for us and our questions - thank you very much Mrs. Katz and Mr. Pekelaar !
